Obituary
'Mela
Ram'
MANY A GENERATION of Doon School boys would remember him as Mr. Mela Ram, but his real identity was Roshan Lal of M/s Mela Ram and Sons. He passed away on Saturday, the 10th of August, 2002 at the ripe old age of 90.
Mr. Mela Ram, his grandfather, started as a photographer in Peshawar in 1894. His family shifted to Dehra Dun after Partition and Mr. Roshan Lal took over from his father. He has been associated with the Doon School ever since. The old Photography lab, opposite the Art School, was the centre of his activity and many of our boys were initiated in Photography there. He covered every single event in the school and kept a meticulous record of all the photographs.
Mathematics was his hobby and he used to help weak students during toye-time till the early seventies. He finally joined Cambrian Hall as a regular Math teacher. He had tremendous patience and never lost his temper. He was, otherwise too, a sincere, sober and simple person. He was fond of his evening walk and could be seen on the Mall Road till even a month ago.
The entire Doon School community- past and present - joins me in expressing utmost grief at his demise. Our heartfelt condolences go to his sons Mohan and Prem and his grandson Bobby, and their families.
May God rest his soul in peace and grant strength to his family to bear this loss.
