Debating In Delhi
Shikhar Singh recalls his participation in the Vasant Valley
Debate, 2005
An Ambassador is a comfortable car,
and with amiable companions, an interesting conversation can kill time. With
discussions varying from Dan Brown to Jayalalitha, we finally approached the
capital full of excitement and anxiety.
The Vasant Valley Debate began in the morning with a briefing session. We
were then escorted to our respective ‘Work Rooms’, a concept interesting in
its own way. A room was divided into four cubicles, equipped with a
blackboard, round table and some stationery to get a discussion going. As
various teams poured in, the topic for the Preliminary Debates was
disclosed. It read, ‘This House believes science and morals do not mix.’
While Tushaar talked of both as parallel concepts being mutually
counter-productive, I called them ‘the pillars of society’ with science as a
tool for development and morals the guidebook. Interestingly, questions of
whether scientists had morals, and the ethics of nuclear physics widened the
perspective of the topic. Even before we breathed a sigh of relief, we were
given the topic of the final debate. It stated, ‘This House believes we
should all merge in one lane’. With Tushaar explaining conformity and
individualism, and I preaching the gospel of globalization and global
attitudes, the debate concluded with us emerging as runners’ up.
For the first time, I was satisfied with my logic and impressed with the
casual, discussion-like, interactive atmosphere of the debate. As we sat
with Mr. Jacob over dinner, we dissected the entire debate and seemed pretty
satisfied. Early next morning we headed for school with the memories of a
good experience still hanging heavy in every sphere of our conversation.
