Autumn in
the Air
Chetan Kaul
(B form)
The rustling of leaves,
Whimsical from my perspective,
And from everyone else’s, deceptive.
The vicissitudes of life seem unbalanced now,
The impossibility of Utopia lined on my brow.
The bliss of the core plastered on my surroundings
Austere from every angle, free from desire.
I sit down and begin to admire
The beauty of a dream.
This fake autumn,
Like an oasis in a desert,
Craving for publicity,
But strangled by the assurance of ignorance.
An abstract illusion in a materialistic world.
Its efforts in vain, suffering inaudible pain,
As it continues its futile quest for appreciation.
Through blind belief we are driven
Away from the diminishing,
But existing ray of hope.
As we unknot the knot of our last resort,
Of our life’s long rope,
Our last endeavour slowly loses its colour
Leaving us unperturbed.
The swan song, the last curse,
Of our ignorant souls,
As they speak up,
“Autumn has no permanent date.”
