Tata House, one of the premier houses of the Doon school was founded in 1937-38 and named after the most illustrious Industrialist of 20th Century in India Mr.J.R.D. Tata.
The Tata House is the only Main Residential House to the North of the Main academic building. The heritage building is marked from the outside by the giant Rubber Tree considered to be one of the largest in Asia.
The House architecturally conceived as one having open arms with a garden in its lap was inaugurated as Barritt’s House in March 1936 by Sir Pheroze Sethna. It was initially named after its first Housemaster, Mr. H. W. Barritt. In 1937, Arthur Foot, The first Headmaster of the School, decided to deviate from the English tradition and renamed the house after one of the greatest business houses of India who were also known for their philanthropic idyll, the Tatas. The Tatas had made a huge initial donation to the school and it was only meet that it be acknowledged. The House also adopted the motto of Tata Steel, the flagship company of the Tatas: “True As Steel”. The House sports a Roman Helmet as its crest on a maroon flag. Regarded as one of the most beautifully constructed buildings on campus, Tata house boasts of a scenic quadrangle with a picturesque fountain and flower beds with colourful blossoms all year round.
Over the years the House has produced great statesmen, civil servants, sportsmen, authors and two of The Doon School’s Headmasters. Most critically the House has been the home away from home to many gentlemen who have lived up to the House motto.
The Tata House boy is as typically soft spoken off the field as he is aggressively competitive on it. He is ‘readerly’, a trifle eccentric, very suave in company and polite in his manners. He is a quick wit, a natural speaker and can hold his fort in any conversation. Most critically, a ‘warrior’ (the Tata boy calls himself and his house-mates that) is trustworthy and dependable. The many illustrious alumni of the House are a tribute to its quintessential nature. No wonder then that Tata House was the first House ever to win the “grand slam” (a rare feat of winning the cricket, soccer and hockey cups in one calendar year) and give the school its first School Captain in Mr. Uma Shankar Bajpai.
The Tata House presently is a home to 96 boys. The present House masters are Mr. Arvind Chalasani and Mr. Debasish Chakrabarty. The tutor group comprises Mr. Gurusharan Singh, Mr. Vinay Pandey, Mr. Ambikesh Shukla, Mr. Rajesh Majumdar, Mrs. Malavika Bhatt, Mr. Sudhir Thapa, Mr. Vidukesh Vimal and Ms. Debosree Samanta Roy. The House dame is Mrs. Ranjit Kaur. The House is led by the House Captain Mr. Aditya Sukhia and his team of school prefects Mr. Amit Kumar, Mr. Pururava Jamwal and Mr. Saurav Mediratta. The team is supported by House Monitors, Mr. Piyush Gupta and Mr. Jayawardhan Singh.
