The 7th Annual Terry Fox Run is being organized by the Indo Canadian Cancer Research Foundation on Sunday, 23rd April, 2017 at The Doon School, Dehradun. Last year we had over 2400 participants and with the support of all, we hope to have even larger numbers this year.
On behalf of the foundation, it gives us great pleasure to invite your students to participate in the run. Reporting time is 6.45 am for registration; Flag Off: 7.45 am. (Entry from Headmaster’s gate, Mall Road). There is no limit to participation and all ages are welcome. You can run, walk or skate; the distance covered will be approximately 4.5 km.
This is an excellent opportunity for students to learn about an inspirational young man who overcame medical adversities including leg amputation caused by his osteosarcoma (a type of bone cancer). He went on to realize his dream and in the process gave hope to innumerable cancer patients. During his own chemotherapy, Terry Fox was motivated by the stoic acceptance shown by other cancer patients. He promised himself to raise funds for cancer research and started his “Marathon of Hope” from New Foundland on the East Coast of Canada. He ran an average of 42 kilometres a day with a prosthetic leg, but succumbed to his disease’s relapse before he could reach his destination. However, we meet annually to celebrate his efforts and honour the spirit behind his pledge, adding our own humble efforts to his. The moral behind this event is about how not to bow down to hard times and challenges of life.
The participants would be required to registration prior to the run; donations are welcome and will be used for Cancer Research in India. Students would also need to obtain permission from their parent / guardian / school.
We look forward to your continued support in creating awareness for this noble cause and in helping finance research so one day there may be a cure for this terrible disease.
