55 delegates from The Doon School Dehradun, Lawrence School Sanawar, Lovedale Tamilnadu, Vivek High School Chandigarh, Emerald Heights Indore, Vidya Devi Jindal School Hisar, Daly College Indore, and Birla Public School Pilani participated with zeal to construct Community Centre. Students carried bricks, dug out mud built walls and washrooms. Sharing his experience Shreyan Mittal from The Doon School said –”We realized the value and dignity of physical labour”.

During the nine days project service students undertook exposure visits and obtained firsthand knowledge on the hardships faced by the rural folks. Siya Sabberwal sounded very conserned saying “How can we let our old people suffer in isolation? We must join hands to reduce migration. This project also organized a training workshop in collaboration with “Society of Pollution & Environmental Conservation Scientists, Dehradun” for the villagers of Dungri skilling them to make energy saving LED bulbs. Over eighty villagers made over 400 LED bulbs. The project co-ordinator Mr Ambikesh Shukla opined, “Such service project taps into the possibility and potential of young people solving the socio-economic problems of India”. Besides construction delegates will take over a cleanliness drive of the Idgad Stream, the only source of water for the village by taking out polythenes and non-degradable materials.

The Community Centre was inaugurated by Mr Prabhakaran Nair the Assistant Headmaster of The Doon School . Addressing the Dungri community on the occasion Mr Nair said-”For prosperous India it is important to connect the urban students with rural India so that our young minds become sensitive to the basic needs and problems”. On this occasion, 104 families of the village were distributed two LED bulbs each family to save electricity. Echoing the sentiments of the villagers towards this project Karishma Rawat a class X student from the village said “This service project has generated hope and confidence in the villagers about the development prospects of the village. We feel cared for.”

The team of the teachers comprised of Mr Anand Kumar Mandhian, Mr Pankaj Das (The Doon School), Mr Tushar Guha (Daly College Indore), Mr Kumar Gautam (Lawrence School Sanawar), Mr Manoj Tiwari (Birla Public School Pilani), Mr Rachit (Lovedale Tamilnadu), Ms Deepti Singh Indore), Ms Suman (Vidya Devi Jindal Hisar) and Mr Amanat Bhullar (Vivek High School Chandigarh).

The training programme included many adventure activities that excited the children and functionally obtained the goal of reaching the ideal of ‘fun-learning’. The children went for various activities like trekking, rock-climbing and a visit to the sulphur caves of Maldevta. It included a night trek and an early morning Heritage Walk and games based on teamwork, goal setting, and acquiring the attributes of a good leader.

During the leadership programme, a dramatics workshop was taken by Mr.Devendra Kumar Mishra and Mr. Manoj Pande in which the tactics of speaking in public and acting were taught to the participants. The Doon School boys Master Keshav and Master Aarav performed a brilliant piece of acting on Premchand’s sotry “Bade Bhaisaheb”. The bharatnatyam guru Veena Agarwal and her disciples staged a beautiful show “Beti Bachao & Beti Padao”  and “Ladli”  which was basically based on the campaign “Save girl child”. This programme was followed by a cultural evening where all participating schools presented a piece of cultural item like a play or a song or a dance based on the theme- Leadership.

On the last day, students were given a task “treasure hunt” which was completed by different groups of students by going to different places around Maldevta. The programme was concluded by certificate distribution ceremony in which students expressed their experiences on their learning during the programme. The programme was also addressed by Ms.Anez Katre, Mr. Ambikesh Shukla & Mr.Anand Kumar Mandhian.

The students had a lot to take away and mull over on their journey back to their respective schools.

‘ After the opening ceremony at The Athenian School, we went to the Tech Museum in San Jose, and had a fantastic time while learning about the greenhouse effect and how to prevent it. We also made a solar city using small solar panels and blocks with LEDs. We also made a windmill and experimented on how to make them more efficient. We watched an IMAX movie about things which happen all the time and are always around us but we do not see them because they are either too slow, too fast or too small to be noticed.

After the memorable experience we returned to the school where we were given a keynote speech by Mr. Bob Borchers ex-Apple executive who was a part of the team which designed the first Apple iphone. He talked about innovation and said that it is an idea that changes the way the world works.,After spending two splendid hours at the aquarium, we headed off to the Asilomar Conference Center, where we spent the rest of the conference. We discussed about leadership and how it is often mistaken to be the same as authority in our respective baraza groups. We also spent some time at the beach playing volleyball and Frisbee. We also walked along the shore and climbed rocks to have a better view of the glorious Pacific Ocean. We also did social service by helping the NGO “Stop Hunger Now” and packing 15000 meals using soy, rice and dehydrated vegetables. These packets would be exported to various poor parts of the world to feed the people. The trip was an enlightening one indeed.’

The British School Young Round Square Conference

A delegation of ten boys escorted by NTC participated in The British School Young Round Square Conference from 2nd December to 4th December 2015. The theme of the conference was “Breaking Walls…. Nothing is impossible”. The conference motivated our delegates to change the world, the best thing is to break walls like Gender Equality and Caste System.

The theme of the conference was  “Discuss, Debate and Decide”. The conference aimed to inculcate amongst the youth the feeling of unity, equality, participation and empowerment.

A delegation of ten  boys escorted by AKM & JNX participated in “The Daly College Round Square Conference” from 4 January to 10 January 2016. The Theme of the conference was ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow…..Dreaming of a Wonderful World. The conference made everyone aware about their responsibility by ensuring that every little honest effort can bring about a change within us and the world around us. The play ‘Time Machine’ presented by Doon School delegation was appreciated by all.

Congratulations to Lanka Adarsh, from Bangalore who has been awarded a place at IIT Roorkee for Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch.) degree. This is India’s highest ranked IIT institution for Architecture and Lanka studied the sciences at ISC. The competition is huge for this course from across the country and the school is delighted for him. Lanka was heavily involved in Social Service and Round Square when he was at school. Lanka also attended a school in Singapore as part of the school’s Student Exchange Programme.

Boys from C and B form attended this conference in June. It was attended by schools throughout India. Inderveer Singh Oberoi and Rishav Misra report on their experiences.

‘We all were then divided into four barazzas considering no specific school students from different school were in the same barazzas. Those who were in the Public Speaking Barazza named ‘Thatcher’ were given a short lecture on public speaking by Shaurya Upadhyay, about how much confidence is required when we give a speech in front of a great crowd. Those who were in the Bal Panchayat Barazza named Gandhi were given a lecture by Keshav Gupta about how a Panchayat is a small form of government and usually works in the primitive as well as developed villages and outlines some of the the issues which they usually deal with. The English Theatre barazza was named Shakespeare which involved discussion on theatre. The last barazza was the Youth Parliament named Lincoln where we discussed how the government works and what problems they discuss. We also learnt that there were three different groups in the Parliament, the government, the neutral party and the opposition.

Our third day commenced with an exciting tree plantation project. Here each school was given a sapling to plant and we were allowed to plant two with our teacher escorts AKM & MNP. Thereafter, we sat through a lecture by Mr. Keshav Gupta on Bal Pachayat. Thereafter, we visited a Village Pachayat in the nearby village. There we discussed the different rules and powers of the Panchayat. An interactive session between the students and the Panchayat took place and many of our doubts and myths were clarified. We returned back to the school for lunch after which we had our second Barazza Session and a theatre workshop with Krish Bedi. Soon, by 6:00 pm, the cultural evening started where all the schools showcased their various talents. Brilliant tabla performances were given by our fellow delegates, Krish Goel and Intervener Oberoi and Chetanya Baid’s Anand Loke song was mesmerizing. Then Varen and Arnav had put up the song “count on me” in which Varen played the guitar, Arnav sang and Rishav played the drums. We performed the play, ‘The Return’. It was a fantastic day which was topped with an even more exciting DJ night and a sumptuous dinner.’

When most of people wanted to relax after four months of the hectic schedule at The Doon School, we hosted the 3rd Regional Round Square Service Project at Chaka, Rudraprayag. The flash floods of Kedarnath in the year 2013 caused massive destruction in the valley of Uttarakhand, which led to washing away of many schools, houses and basic facilities in this area. The major loss was the washing away of schools situated near the banks of river Alaknanda. As everyone is already aware, the 2013 flash floods wreaked devastation in the Kedar Valley and thousands of people died and thousands are still missing. The flash floods have also taken away the livelihood of many people in the hills. Many of the main earning members of families have died, making it difficult for the rest of the family to even have a meal or find a means of livelihood.

The school has been working with Taxsila Public School and now construction of school has started, which Doon is hoping to have completed by next year.

There were sixteen delegates from the following schools apart from Doon which included: MGD in Jaipur, Assam Valley School and Rajmata Krishna Kumari Girls School, Jodhpur. They started their journey to Chaka village on 2nd June. From Doon School Ananya Shukla, from Kashmir House and Neveditta Ghughtyal from Hyderabad House and Mr K. C. Maurya joined this project.

This time delegates were to help in the construction work of the school. Initially, they helped construction workers by transporting boulders from the river side to the construction site by making a human chain. Since transportation in the hills is very expensive, our delegates collected and transported large number of boulders which would definitely reduced the overall construction cost of the school building. Over the next few days, they also helped in shifting cement bricks and filling the pillar holes. It was hard work but everyone was very enthusiastic and satisfied with whatever work they did over these days.

We also trekked to Kartikey Swami Temple which is situated approx. 10,000 feet above the sea level and trekked 3.5 km from the dense forest with lots of flowers and other flora and fauna. This trek was to give delegates an experience of trekking in the mountains before climbing to Kedarnath which was the most awaited activity during this trip. This time we wanted to show the area from where devastation had started in 2013.

The 3rd Rudraprayag Social Service Project not only made us realize about the difficulties faced by the mountain people in the flood affected are but also helped us find new friends and also thought us the qualities of discipline and most importantly teamwork. The day we started off with our project made us think that how will these 10 days pass. But they passed away in a few seconds and we are just left with beautiful memories to cherish. Every moment was memorable and joyfull’, said Surangana Gajendra Singh, a Class 12th student from Rajmata Krishna Kumari Girls Public School, Jodhpur.

‘ The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the services of others’ said Mahatma Gandhi. ‘The day I got to know about this service project. I was very excited for this project. I am glad that I came across a project like this which gave me a lot to remember, lots of confidence and happiness. I have learned that you can gain knowledge, not only from classrooms and books, but also from outside the classrooms. I would like to thank The Doon School team for this wonderful experience,’ said Nehal Gehlot Class 10th student from Rajmata Krishna Kumari Girls Public School, Jodhpur.

‘To be honest, I wasn’t sure if I actually wanted to come for the same service project again but am glad I did! I am happy to be here. It feels so good to help those kids and thanks to The Doon School for giving us this opportunity. Lending a hand to build that school makes me feel proud. I am sure I will be back to see the kids smile and to hear everyone appreciating us for what we are doing. While working our inner happiness ignites and gives us the strength to go on. At some point we feel like giving up but then when we think about the things people lost when the floods came. We feel an inner power to go on. I am really very happy to be part of this project again’ said Angela N Williams a Class 11th student from Maharani Gayati Devi Girls Public School, Jaipur.

The post June 2015: First Schools to trek to Kedarnath after 2013 Kedar Valley Disaster appeared first on The Doon School.

The school had nine rooms and a play ground and washroom facilities for one hundred and seventy pupils. It is currently being run from tents. The Doon School, as part of its social service curriculum and as part of its contribution to the people of hills hit by the calamity, has begun to rebuild the school. The land has been acquired and the site clearance has been carried out by the boys. During three mid terms, boys have gone and worked at the village. This work has included carrying material to the site (as it is not accessible by vehicles), building hollow bricks, clearing the site and making the retaining wall. The boys have also and will also continue to spend time with the school children to give them moral support and show solidarity as many are from homes which have been washed away during the disaster. In order to help fund the project, and with the support of the entire school community, we once again cancelled the annual Founders’ dinner and contributed the cost of the dinner towards this cause.

During December 2014, a number of the schools in Round Square have come forward to help in the project and thirty pupils from all over the country went to Rudraprayag to help in the construction work.
