The championship saw thrilling performances and multiple new records. Abhay Pratap Verma set a new High Jump record in the Medium Category by clearing an impressive 1.67 meters. Sushil Kasi shattered the 200 meters record in the Medium Category with a time of 23.88 seconds, showcasing his speed. Udathveer Singh Pasricha broke the 100 meters record in the Senior Category, clocking 11.25 seconds, while Kovid Kagdee set a new 110-meter hurdles record in the Senior Category with 16.31 seconds. Exchange student Calvin Wagner claimed victory in the Pentathlon event.

The championship also recognized the best athletes, with Aayan Shrivastava and Jaydhen Bhutia winning in the Junior Category, and Sushil Kasi dominating the Medium Category. The prestigious Mumtaz Ahmed Trophy for the best overall athlete was awarded to Udathveer Singh Pasricha for his exceptional performance.

Tata House emerged as the overall winner, taking home the House Cup, Junior’s Cup, Medium’s Cup, and Marching Cake.

In the closing ceremony, The Deputy Headmaster Mr. Kamal Ahuja gave away the trophies, mementos and certificates to the participating teams:

The results were as follows:

Winners: The Doon School A-Team With 10.0 match points and 15.5 game points
(The team members were: Harshvardhan Agrawal, Shathaayau B Patil, Arnavv D Jain and Aryan Kasera)

1^st Runners-up: Welham Boys’ School. With 8.0 match points and 11.5 game points
(The team members were: Harshal Bajaj, Shreyansh Jindal, Suphal Sharma and Kushagra Didwania)

2^nd Runners-up: Ann Mary School with 6.0 match points and 14.5 game points
(The team members were: Adnan Saeed Ahmad, Chetna Ramola, Aishwarya Maan and Harsh Joshi)

Aryan Kasera of The Doon School, Harshal Bajaj of Welham Boys’ School, Arnavv D Jain of The Doon School and Shreyansh Jindal of Welham Boys’ School also won the Board Prizes in their respective boards.

The tournament was played under the Swiss system where each team played 5 rounds. The tournament was organised by Mr.Chit Ranjan Kagdee the master in charge and Shatayu Patil the chess captain of the school.

In fact, the movement has now expanded and is no longer limited to Sweden. Students from more than 2000 cities in 123 countries protested against Climate Change, joining the movement Greta began. In India, numerous events were conducted across the country, of which two of the protests were in schools. Spearheading the movement in Uttarkhand was The Doon School.

The school staged a protest inside their campus. Students from The Doon School and neighbouring schools, namely Cambrian Hall, Welham Boys, Hopetown Girls and Unison World School, and Gyanodaya Meerut marched as a form of protest against a government that they felt isn’t committed enough to solving Climate Change. The students marched because they believed that the required action wasn’t being taken in status quo. While marching, they chanted slogans like ‘Adults, use your power’ and ‘We are the change’.

Following the protest, five speakers addressed the gathering. The first speaker of the event was the School Captain of The Doon School, Nandil Sharma. He spoke about how in today’s day and age we have a choice between whether or not to act, and that we need to come out on the right side of it. He emphasised the fact that although the boys were, at the time, supposed to be studying for their upcoming examinations, felt that all efforts would be futile because there wouldn’t be a future if we continue on the path we are currently taking. He further spoke about why we need to be aware of the Climate Change crisis, and why we need to try to make a change due to the political inaction of our leaders.

The second speaker was the president of Tthe Doon School Old Boy’s Society, Mr. Rahul Kohli, who spoke about how numerous businessman, politicians and even environmentalists were oblivious to the damage being caused by climate change. He mentioned the fact that his generation has failed to do anything about it and how it was up to the current generation to become the change. He then advised the students to question the effect everything has on the environment and speak out against what we feel is wrong, as only then can we make a change.

Mr Kohli was followed by Padma Shree Dr Anil Kumar Joshi, founder of HESCO who has vast amounts of knowledge in the field of ecology. Dr Joshi spoke about the effect of urbanisation on the environment, and our incessant need for comfort which comes at the cost of the environment. He spoke about how countries are more worried about their economy than their environment, and the fact that we began caring about the environment only once Greta Thunberg took action. However, this feeling of love for the environment needs to come from within us, and we need to implement what we have learned into our everyday lives and make a conscious effort to save the environment.

The fourth speaker was the Headmaster of The Doon School Matthew Raggett, who informed the crowd about the frightening facts of Climate Change, and the school’s efforts to reduce its impact. The last speaker was Bhavya Rajgariha who gave the vote of thanks. Also present on the occasion were Mr. Kamal Ahuja, Deputy Headmaster, Ms. Stuti Kuthiala, Deputy Head of Pastoral Care, Mr. Debashish Chakravarty, Deputy Head of Academics, and Mr. Piyush Malaviya, Director of Public Affairs at The Doon School.

The event included challenges like finding debris using graphical data, launching projectile rockets, landing parachuted rovers, maneuvering computerized rovers and making a proposal for an extra- terrestrial Martian settlement. All challenges required participants to design their own models and optimize them to maximize their potentials. ‘Alpha’ was conducted with the objective of instigating young minds to think differently, and the objective was certainly achieved.

The programme is conducted at Maldevta farms, at the foothills of the Himalayas. Living in tents close to nature brings out different aspects of individuals. Furthermore, sharing tents with students from different schools not only encourages students to make long lasting friendships but also to look out for each other and take charge. The discussions encourage reflection and provide opportunities for students to do – reflect – act – improve resulting in long lasting learning.

The second day of Founders began with the Humanities Exhibition. The exhibition’s theme was “Shifting Boundaries”, and many classrooms had been prepared to showcase posters, maps, pictures and models under the subjects of History, Geography and Psychology. In addition to this, a Moot court which was based on the International Court of Justice – the case of the Kashmir issue was also staged in front of the exhibition rooms.

Concurrently, the junior boys were also seen participating in the Hindi Street Play and the Yoga Exhibition, which took place in different parts of the campus. The Doon School also played the annual cricket fixture with the Old Boys Team, and successfully chased a target of 126 runs, winning the match by 8 wickets. Later in the day, the Chandbagh Debate ,a debate between the current School debating team and the team of the Batch of 1993, the silver Jubilee batch, was also organised. The topic of the debate read “This house regrets the primacy accorded to house-spirit”. In a closely-contested debate, the current batch emerged as winners, and Yash Dewan was adjudged the Best Speaker.

In the evening, the main Founders Day Hindi Production was staged in the Rose Bowl. The play, titled “Jaanch Partal”, directed by Mr. Hammad Farooqui & produced by Mr. Devendra Mishra saw excellent acting from Manandeep Singh, Armaan Thapar and Karthik Rathore, and was hugely applauded by the audience. With the play, the second day of Founders came to an end. Present on the occasion were the Chairman of the board Mr. Sunil Kant Munjal, Headmaster Mr. Matthew Raggett, the outgoing President of of the Old Boys Society Mr. Jaswinder Singh Bull and the incoming president Mr. Rahul Kohli, and members of the Board of Governors.

The third and final day of the 83rd Founders Day began with the Pagal Gymkhana hosted by Jaipur House. At the Gymkhana, a large number of stalls had been set up by the boys of the School. The stalls served not only as sources of entertainment, but also excellent food from different corners of the city.

The main event of Founders Day took place in the Rose Bowl later in the evening. The event included speeches from the Chairman of the Board of Governors of The Doon School, Chief Guest, and the School Captain. The Chairman, Mr Sunil Munjal, spoke about the ideals of merit and equality that the school pioneers, and stressed its relevance in the 21st century. In order to uphold these ideals, Mr Munjal talked about the scholarship programmes that will be available for students from all backgounds.

The Chairman was followed by Ms Meagan Fallone, the Chief Guest of the event. Ms Fallone talked about the Barefoot College, an organisation that had been founded by a Doon School alumnus and that she currently headed in the capacity of the CEO. In her speech, she mentioned the role of women in successfully spearheading the organisation’s projects, and highlighted the importance of the same in the constantly-changing world in which we live.

Finally, the School Captain Viksit Verma gave a speech on how the school had added value to his own life, and his memories of the six years of his life spent on the campus.

The programme finally drew to a close by stellar performances by the School Choir and Orchestra, which was very well-received by the audience.

The delegates assembled at the Doon school at 1450 hrs on 4^th October 2018. Ms. Anez Katre conducted some ice-breaking activities followed by a discussion on the objectives of the Round Square in general and Doon Leadership Training Programme in particular. The delegates were divided into 6 groups to discuss the ideals of the RS and give their presentations.

Ms. Katre also conducted a brainstorming sessions on the meaning and styles of leadership.

On 5^th October 2018, the delegates attended the morning assembly of the host school and proceeded to Maldevta Farms camp. After detailed instructions from the organising staff and the trainers, the delegates were allotted their tents. The delegates were divided into three groups – The Dauntless, Himalayan Army & Mountain Stunners. One group undertook rock climbing, slithering and other adventure activities under the watchful eyes of the trainers; the second group was taken on a trek to Sulphur Caves while the third group attended a workshop on Leadership conducted by Ms.Katre.

In the evening, a famous theatre group from Uttarakhand – Sambhav Manch Parivar presented two Hindi one act plays on the plight of women in India and the other on the need to stop polluting our holy river Ganga. After dinner the delegates were taken on a night trek.

On 6th October, in addition to the adventure activities, treks and workshop on leadership, a cultural evening was organised. The delegates from all the participant schools presented skits, dances, songs and poems on ‘Leadership’.  The cultural programme was followed by a jam session during which all the delegates danced their hearts out and the Maldevta Camp reverberated to the beats of the thrilling songs played in the background. After dinner the delegates retired to their tents but not before exchanging pleasantries with their new friends.

On 7^th October 2018, the ‘Treasure Hunt; was organised for the delegates. Divided into three groups, the delegates left no stone unturned to outdo each other. Though the main aim was to hunt imaginary treasure, the real treasure they hunted was in terms of team work, competitive spirit and visits to some beautiful places in Maldevta. The activities and the response of the delegates during the closing ceremony vouched for the fact that the conference had achieved its objectives. After distribution of certificates and souvenirs the delegates departed for their respective schools.

The Doon RS Leadership Conference was a very effective platform for the delegates to explore the concepts of leadership and learn that to become a leader one’s convictions need to be rooted in self responsibility, spirit of service to others and ethics. The delegates learnt to work in collaboration. They were actively engaged in all activities; their problem-solving and critical analysis acumen refined. They consciously and unconsciously polished their latent leadership traits. The delegates also got ample opportunity to share their perspectives on various topics. In a nutshell, the conference achieved its objective of contributing towards producing global citizens who are driven by the desire to change the world into a better place.

An exemplary performance was given by Adit Chatterjee, who was adjudged 6 th best speaker out of about 200 students participating in the Academy. We then departed the resort town of Kranjska Gora on the 30 th of June in the afternoon, making our way to Trieste for a much- needed break. We arrived just as dusk began, and we made our way to the Piazza Unita d’ Italia to watch the sunset and grab dinner. Exploring the neighborhood, we found ourselves on a pier jutting out into the sea and celebrated a birthday at midnight there as well. Our beach day planned for the next day was thwarted by the raging sea and the stormy clouds. The last night, we had dinner along the Grand Canal and enjoyed the music as it wafted out of the restaurants nearby. All in all, our ten days by the sea and in the hills left us all a bit smarter and very refreshed.

Having traversed the pass successfully, the team became the first recorded expedition to do so in such weather conditions.

The Bandarpoonch Massif has been witness to many mountaineering exploits undertaken by students of The Doon School. Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, the first man on Mt Everest, went so far as to call it the ‘Doon School Mountain’ in his autobiography.
The expedition was organised to commemorate an ex Dosco Major Narendra Dhar Jayal’s 60th Death Anniversary. Major Jayal was a pioneer in Indian Mountaineering, and is credited for being instrumental in establishing mountaineering as a professional sport in India. He was the founding principal of the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling. He perished in 1958 while on an expedition to Cho Oyu, the sixth highest mountain in the world.

Having traversed the pass successfully, the team became the first recorded expedition to do so in such weather conditions.

Mani Shankar Aiyar

A diplomat turned Congress politician, Mani Shankar Aiyer is known for always speaking his mind. He is the author of many books such as ‘Confessions of a secular fundamentalist’ and ‘A Time of Transition: Rajiv Gandhi to The 21st Century’. He elucidated, through his humorous speech, his take on education, politics and more!

Shantum Seth is a teacher in a Zen Buddhist tradition and has been leading pilgrimages through Bihar, UP and Nepal since 1988.Shantum is actively involved in teacher training through ‘Cultivating Mindfulness in Education’. He is a Senior Advisor to the World Bank on Pilgrimage Tourism and has worked in the corporate sector and later in social development, including fifteen years of which were with the United Nations, managing programmes on volunteer promotion and artisan support across 16 countries.

YASH JOHRI:

Yash Johri is presently a student at the Faculty of Law, Delhi University. He’s an alumnus of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. At University he majored in International Politics with a focus on China, South East Asia and India from the lens of international law, foreign policy as well as politics. He also minored in Mandarin (Chinese), and has attained proficiency. While at Georgetown, Johri was a founding member of the Georgetown University India Initiative and was the founding editor of GU India Ink, a blog dedicated to covering policy and politics issues related to India from Washington DC.

He is a World Record Holder in adventure driving, for driving non-stop from New Delhi to the world’s

highest mountain pass Marsimik La at 18,632 feet height, in 55 hours of non-stop driving.His English book ‘In Quest of the Last Victory’ published by Pearson Longman is a best seller in its category and so is his Hindi book ‘Veer Usko Janiye’ published by Prabhat Prakashan.He is a social worker and runs an organisation called ‘Apni Duniya Apna Ashiana’ for the welfare of under privileged children.

The various awards and recognitions that he has received for his work include –President National Role Model Award from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam 2007 and the Chief of Army Staff Commendation 2005.

Jo Chopra McGowan is the Executive Director of the Latika Roy Foundation, a Dehradun based organization providing services to children with disabilities. She is a writer, a photographer and a convicted criminal who has been arrested and jailed in the United States for protest activities half a dozen times.

Akshit Batra is an MBA at the Indian School of Business Hyderabad and was awarded the coveted Torch Bearer Award at ISB for excellence while at school. He was also awarded the Make in India Award by the Bharat Nirman Foundation in association with the Central Government’s Make in India Initiative.

He was the youngest Indian Delegate at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002. He is also an International level debater, MUNer and Founding Chair of CII Young Indians Dehradun Chapter.

Kalikesh Singh Deo is a second-time sitting Member of Parliament in Lok Sabha from the Bolangir constituency of Odisha and a leader of the Biju Janata Dal.Mr Deo is currently a member of the Standing Committee on Petroleum and Natural Gas and theConsultative Committee on Finance and Corporate Affairs. His developmental focus remainsprimarily on livelihood, child rights and climate change issues.
